Mobile networks are private companies. They make money by charging for services and location data is no different. Each request for location of a mobile telephone costs, anything from 4 to 7 pence, so if media creators want to use location data, they have some idea of how to pay for it.
For some this will be an accommodation of deeply commercial interests and, as such, a betrayal. We believe, however, that it is essential to engage with such a pervasive and potent technology as mobile communications. Our target user groups need to be helped to get involved with these systems, enabling them to use these systems to deliver something other than more consumption and surveillance.
We want to know how people would go about creating alternative business models. How could user/viewers be encouraged to pay for the content delivered over these systems? Could the networks be encouraged to lower prices? Could ownership of the networks be re-configured in some way?
